Workout and weight loss on wheels- starting groups

My original plan and interest in this blog was to start groups on the topic. Well it is still very much an interest so I am going to seek out consumer service organizations and offer this opportunity. So many people decide it is an impossibility but I think the key is to have people offering support and encouragement. New techniques is also a plus that would result in success. Eventually I can offer the lessons I have designed and meet one on one with people- if they would like. I know that once I start with one, interest will be generated. Perhaps Consumer Advocacy Program will accept my offer. What do people have to lose - but weight?

Workout and weight loss on wheels- fitness not food- for comfort

It is common that when a person is depressed (s)he turns to food. When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These chemicals interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain. They trigger a positive feeling in the body, like morphine. Feelings that follow a run or workout is often described as "euphoric." That feeling, called a runner's high, can be accompanied by a positive and energizing outlook on life. So what if a person turns to exercise for comfort? That would decrease weight-and a whole lot more. Two reasons to get out of depression- exercise and lose weight. Think about the benefits of literally running off depression! Therefore, ice cream is not the only answer.

Rock climbing can easily be adapted for people with pysical challenges. If you have a prosthesis use a climbing shoe it can be put over an existing prosthetic foot. Getting to the rock can be difficult because of uneven terrain. Sometimes it is bes not to wear a prosthesis, just a rubber sleeve on the limb. To get the feel of what it’s like to climb and how the muscles work and the leg performs try an indoor climbing wall, there you learn to put on a harness. Some people use a leg designed for Telemark skiing. It has become one of the fastest growing sporting activities. A person can climb to his comfort level thanks to indoor climbing walls and a variety of programs that accommodate all ages and all abilities, including wheelchair users and arm amputees. It is not only a physical activity but cerebral too. It takes patience and planning, and forces the climber to make decisions as one gets to a spot and strategizes where to go from there. Adaptive climbers don’t have the same strength, so some may rely more on their fingers for support.Communication with your belayer is extremely important. Not understanding the terminology can lead to accidents. Top roping means that at the top of the wall or rock there is an anchor where the rope is already looped over it and both ends of the rope hand down. The belayer attaches one end of the rope to their belay device, and the climber ties onto the other end.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- workOUT- tennis

Wheelchair tennis started in 1976 and has grown into a Paralympic sport. It can be played with no modification by anyone who can wheel a chair and move their arms. The one change in rules is that the player who uses a wheelchair gets two bounces of the ball before it has to be hit, instead of one. Chair users need to learn to grip the racquet differently than able-bodied players because they need to hold the racquet and push the chair at the same time. The chair must be pushed with the heel of the hand and the inside of the racquet grip, so the racquet is up and ready. The racquet is held in the dominant hand with four fingers, leaving the thumb free. This leaves the pad of the hand free, giving the player a contact point with the wheel or push rim. But the free hand does the majority of the work on the court, because it is constantly pushing and turning the chair. Strategy for returning serves varies slightly from able-bodied players they must stay further behind the base line. Moving around the court involves reacting, negotiating, and recovering. If you stay at the net, you won’t be able to return long shots. After coming in for the shot, you recover quickly and get back to the hub, always going back and forth- quick movement is important because otherwise they won't be able to reach the ball. You also must turn with your head often. Learn to push with the heel of your hand so the racquet is up and ready.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- workOUT and water ski

Here's a fun sport that can be enjoyed by all in warm weather. One ski can work for amputees with one leg. Some use two skis, or one ski with two legs. Individuals who don't stand use a “sit ski” which can be wide, narrow, or competitive. The sit ski was created by a person who has quadriplegia. All sit-down skiers use a singlewide ski to which a metal-framed cage is attached. The skier sits in a canvas sling that can be adjusted up or down to change the skier’s center of balance and comes in a variety of models to suit the skiers ability level. Those who sit use a singlewide ski which is attached to a metal-framed cage. The skier sits in a canvas sling that can be adjusted up or down to change the skier’s center of balance. They can accommodate those with good stability, poor stability, or use of only one arm. Workout and weight loss on wheels- workOUT and surf

As the weather warms up the thought of working out, out rather than in may be more appealing. Furthermore, the thought of getting involved with water sports may be just the incentive needed. A wonderful upper body workout is surfing. Having something to ride on is your primary, if you have no intention of standing up to ride waves use a boogie board and kick to move in the water. Once that is mastered use a wave ski (a surfboard that you sit on and paddle with a kayak paddle). People with brain or spinal cord injuries, amputations, and cerebral palsy have a blast. Lay-down paddle boards also work and are fun. If you are able to stand, that type of surfing requires takes more practice and be aware of the size of the board. The bigger, wider, and longer the board the more stability it offers.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- What food means to you.

Food gives us much more than just daily sustenance; it gives us hope, love, and comfort. It shows love through the fancy meals we eat with our relatives during holidays. It shows hope with the ice cream and chocolate we may drown ourselves in when depressed. It shows comfort with the bowl of hot soup on a cold winter day or the pizza we eat with friends at a birthday party. It also shows our spirituality when observing a religious fast or following Jewish kashrut laws. Through thick and thin, food is the one thing that can bring people together in times of need, or even cause new friendships. The meaning of food is the definition of life itself.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- make it up as you wheel

My new wheelchair sits me higher than my old so now every transfer is challenging. I have to be able to raise my torso after a transfer. It's hard but it will get easier in time. For now it makes much more sense to make lifting my torso my regular exercise than lifting my weight. Sometimes I will do both but my advice is to do what is most necessary to you at any given time.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- drink 8 glasses

The most basic tip to someone who wants to be healthy is to drink 8 glasses of water a day. Even fresh fruits and vegetables must be washed with tap water. However, where you get your source of the beverage is debatable. Though most people are aware of the benefits of bottled water, it is meaningful to mention it here. Tap water can be filled with lead from plumbing, microorganisms in the water from sewage, or cancer causing particles from illegal dumping. Bottled water production is strictly monitored and regulated to make sure that water is clean and free of contaminants. Clean and safe tap water is not always available making bottled water highly in demand. Contamination can be due to natural disasters, illegal dumping, or lead in plumbing. Bottled water can be lifesavers because this is clean and safe to drink.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- "Cleaning House"

The subtitle is in quotes because the house is actually your body. To do this you won't need Spick and Span but you will need to follow special directions and you may a complicated proceedure known as detox. However, for now I suggest we keep it simple. 1)Consider using organic food. These are free of insecticides, pesticides & additives. 2)Choose to eat what is in season and so not need to be shipped in from another locaion. 3)Eat fresh; they are less likely to be exposed to light, heat,& oxygen. 4)They should be lightly cooked (dry fried, grilled & broiled). Boiling and roasting looses nutrients. 5)Be cautious of labels that say low sodium, low fat & high fiber. 6) Eat whole grains (rice, bread, pasta). 7) Eat sustainable fish. Workout and weight loss on wheels- comfortable and healthy

Healthy foods don't have to be obscure nor lack taste. Consider typically popular ones then dress them up. This is especially important for kids who are often picky eaters. Macaroni and cheese into a healthier dish by covering it with crumbs of broccoli and basil or mixing it thoroughly with vegetables. Spaghetti and Meatballs with whole wheat pasta or spaghetti squash. Vegetable pizza instead of the usual red sauce. Mashed potatoes with cauliflower mixed in (it's the same color). Chili made with turkey or chicken. Fried chicken baked in the oven with cornflake crumbs. Lasagna with layers of zucchini instead of noodles. Grilled cheese with whole wheat toast made in the toaster not in a fry pan. Sneak avocado in the brownies or zucchini also works. Ice cream sundaes with yogurt. Ideas are endless!

workout and weight loss on wheels- Have your cake and eat it too.

Save sugary desserts for special occasions and less often so when you do have them it will be a treat. There are so many other good tasting items you can eat like fruits and berries instead. However, if you insist on having your cake and eating it too try the following: using apple sauce as an ingredient, swap white flour with whole wheat flour; cover it with whipped cream or merengue; sub natural sugar for confectioners; soy or coconut milk in the frosting; fresh beets add texture and color; fill it with blueberries. As for the topping, cover it with fruits and berries.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- Amputee and yoga

It teaches different breathing techniques useful for dealing with pain; mainly focusing. It teaches that parts of the body are addressed not the body as one entity. I teaches ways to exercise joints and keep them healthy and how to avoid further damage and the need for knee replacement. It also reaches shifting your weight on both legs; balance is important for amputees cince the side the limb is on (for leg amputtees) is lighter. Avoiding putting weight on the right leg causes limping and throwing the body out of alignment. Yoga also exercises the mind and soul. As an amputee spiritual and mental exercise are important also; it is easy to fall into “poor me mode." After yoga falling asleep is easier cause you lear to relax.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- Continuity counts

Missing a day once in awhile is not the end of the world nor is cheating with a dessert. It is important to forgive yourself if that happens and move on. However if you stop the exercise routine all together or stray from the diet completely consequences will be grave. You will be rendering all of your hard work useless, the results can really set you back psychologically, and it will be increasingly difficult to restart your routine. Although I only use one small 5 pound weight I can really tell that since I haven't been watching television regularly, I haven't been doing my strength training. I have a brand new wheelchair that is harder to transfer on and off of than my old one. I have been taking longer and exerting more energy than before. I must get back to my routine. If I don't only I suffer.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- a healthy holiday

Passover is a Jewish holiday which celebrates the Jelish people being freed fromm Egyptian slavery. People who observe the holiday strictly follow strict dietary guidelines for 8 days. As the story goes, once the Jewish people were freed, they had no time to allow their bread to rise. Therefore, we replace bread, grains, and flour with matzoh (a cracker) and matzoh meal when baking. Foods such as pasta, baked goods, cereal, and pizza were prohibited for years. They have since been replaced with versions that simulate the original foods but the taste is different as is the ingredients. People eat a lot of fish, chicken, meat, vegetables (not corn or peas)anf fruits. Wheight loss is usually a residual effect of this holiday.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- fitness programs

This does not happen enough- especially for people with challenges. It would be so easy to plan and implement. Not only would it be an exercise class but there is also a social component to it also. Both parts are extremely important for those who do not get out much and do not take care of their bodies as well as they should. Planning involves just contacting a few local agencies for people with challenges. Speak to the program managers and explain that you would like to work with a few residents in their homes monthly (or however often). Submit an outline with the general objective of improving people's physical activity. This may include merely renting videos from the library on various workouts. Each "class" should include introductions, discussion on the importance of exercise, personal stories (if desired), the activity, and a socialization time. This should be documented weekly by consumers and by you. The better the documentation the more likely the program will be picked up by a larger entity and funding will follow.
