Save sugary desserts for special occasions and less often so when you do have them it will be a treat. There are so many other good tasting items you can eat like fruits and berries instead. However, if you insist on having your cake and eating it too try the following: using apple sauce as an ingredient, swap white flour with whole wheat flour; cover it with whipped cream or merengue; sub natural sugar for confectioners; soy or coconut milk in the frosting; fresh beets add texture and color; fill it with blueberries. As for the topping, cover it with fruits and berries.
