Wheeling with new wheels- another program

It's time to get another disability awareness program started. I'm glad I waited because it will be easier to get recomendations from staff at Arbor Place where it is working well. I'd like it to be at a YMCA or YWCA and I'd like to do it to be on employment. I wrote to the chamber about doing a presentation for employers. I would show a video and discuss terms such as reasonable accommodations and undue hardship important for employers. I may get further with Rep. Gingrich's office backing me. Hopefully I will also benefit by the help of Scott from the Recumbent Bikes Store. That man has many customers.

Wheeling with new wheels- Arbor Place

The weekly classess on disability awareness for kids seem to be going well. Thus far I have had speakers with disabilities or those who have programs for people with disabilities. Every time I thik I'm out of topic ideas since I don't have many contacts, I realize someone else I know who can present something. Next week is adapted cooking and Betsy will talk bout all the meals she's made over the years. Then I called an OT to ask if I could borrow some cookig tools and the lady is considering coming ad bringing them in to show the kids. I would be thrilled with her just talking about Occupational Therapy. I have good pictures of many many kitchen tools I can make interesting to the kids.

Wheeling with new wheels - a scout program

I am used to adapting things to work for me. I did some research on the scout program in other stated, as requested by my boss. Some of the problems started out with kids who were unmotivated and grew due to the scouts thinking outside the box. I really want to try adapting a program based on out of the box thinking. I would like to think that kind of thought process would work, it's worth a try. I believe in the kids, even the ones with poor behavior. If people (my parents) gave up on me I would not be driving a van right now. My paperwork indicated I was not capable of driving. Those kids need someone (a professional) to believe in them. The scout program is about giving kids opportunities to grow.

Wheeling with new wheels- motivation

Appearantly my Infobility speech wasn't as bad as I thought. I got a message from someone who has many consumers looking to be more active. She heard my talk and wants me to do a program on motivation for her office. I never thought something good would come out of the experience since my timing was so off. It's exciting for me to reach an untapped resource. I think this topic is so very unique for most people they will consider. The system is arranged so that people with disabilities do not have to be motivation. Everything is optional so if someone doesn't want to be involved participated that is unfortunate because in our society we do not usually get a pass on life tasks. If there was no interest in daily tasks (cooking, cleaning, household chores, shopping, working etc.) and there was no money to hire someone else to do those tasks, families would be in decline and other concerns would be investigated.

Wheeling with new wheels - networking by volunteering

I volunteered in a gift wrapping booth for an agency. I felt pretty useless cause I knew I couldn't do the job but I was told I could distribute literature. So I showed up and sat with the cash box. I then realized I could fold boxes. I did a few but it was really really slow. I then mentioned Infobility and the Chili coookoff- who knows. Helping other groups with their holidays events is a good means of networking. Chamber Mixers are not the only means of learning what else exists in the community. Those events require that the person is social and outgoing. This is not the method for everyone. Business groups are expensive and require that you have contacts to share in order to promote someone else.

Wheeling with new wheels- chilli cookoff

I hope I get good participation from United Disability Services since their involvement is the key. When I chose to work with Excentia for the forum in May I got 40 parents because they are so well respected. I think this is the same sort of thing should show similar results. Also to get radio spots I must be a nonprofit. UDS offers so much and I could really use their help after this activity concludes. They have the consumers (with mostly physical disabilities), the services, the programs, the history, the connections and contacts. I am starting out small with one program and hopefully good word will spread. There are many other service groups, who need the money, have not shown me loyalty it was time to look elsewhere. I couldn't keep spinning my wheels, "just do it" like Nike says. It will get the name of my organization out. That's the goal.

Wheeling with new wheels- Guest speaker from Lehigh Valley CIL

Later today I will participate in a disability meeting at DEC. The Lehigh Valley Center for Independent Living will have a few representatives to discuss and find out what has been happening in this area with consumers. I will be interested in hearing what is going with our CIL but I'm much more interested in hearing what has been going on in the other Pennsylvania CIL's. Of course I'll mention Infobility but I mostly need to listen. It is important for consumers and agencies to listen to what is being said and apply it to their own. I have not heard what is happening here in Lancaster. It is much easier to implement a program that is successful elsewhere than to create one from scratch. The Lehigh Valley Center for Independent Living has always been full of positive and innovative events.

Wheeling with new wheels- a housing opportunity

I completed the application for HDC Board. It would open up many opportunities for me and enable me to help them qualify for grants. My perspective, that of disability, is unique to the rest of the world and it needs to be considered by big businesses. The experience/opportunity would really validate what I have to offer, increase my confidence, and generate interest in Infobility. I'm treating it like a job and am taking it really seriously. It is important to have the consumer perspective. I am not one to just listen and not offer any input so hopefully that will not be the case. It would be a worthwhile experience and I would like to get their consumers motivated enough to get involved with issues from their own housing programs.

Wheeling with new wheels- an outreach idea

I found a unique way to reach employers- I belong to a group called "Lighten Up Lancaster." They are comprised of business people and agency staff. The issue is health and wellness, Lighten Up Lancaster has ongoing programs and meetings of their subgroups. Recently I was asked to develop strategies for making the workplace wellness accessible. I came up with ten ideas and offered to include a food awareness component to the program as a whole. Rather than sending my job accommodations information to employers in my roladex. I will do it through this program- it wil be a more effective and efficient way. There are always new networking ideas to try.

Wheeling with new wheels

I replied that I was interested in serving on the board of my Housing Company. Yesterday I received a call that the Executive Director was interested in meeting me for lunch. I assume it's to get to know me and then make his decision. I'm not the only candidate who replied so I'm be cautiously optimistic but it's a neat opportunity to meet someone I never would have. I'm told it's a new concept to have a resident on the board of my management company- it shouldn't be. I guess I'll mention Infobility to him. That will enable me to stand out from others and surely I want him to know about it; he'd have contacts.

Wheeling with new wheels- disabled dancing

I met a great lady who wants to start a dance group. The lady in charge was a professional dancer for years and then had to quit due to a physical problem. Eventually she became interested in adapting dance for people with a disability. It sounds great and feels good when the person is involved. In the west coast there is a large dance movement for those with disabilities. I hope that it catches on and generates more attention. It is interesting for people who do not get out much in the community. If the group includes people without challenges, which is logical to help others perform, it becomes an inclusive program. That is even better and can be promoted throughout the east.

Wheeling with new wheels

Employment, or lack thereof is a crucial issue for Infobility. Since it's hard to have a program with this audience since time is money, I will see how I do with a handout. The conclusion will offer a program in which a 13 minute video will be played and discussed. I hope I generate some interest. I can certainly make it the subject of the program in March at the Manheim Library. This way I can meet with folks 1 on 1 and talk with them about their concerns. Hopefully there will be some, I do not want to meet with those who are already hiring people with challenges. I will reach out to small businesses with a simple question "What have been your experiences hiring people with disabilities or do you have concerns doing so?"

Wheeling with new wheels

I met someone who has te same passion as I do but about starting a dance group like I saw this weekend. She is actually enthusiastic about working together it doesn't matter that my specific goal differs from hers. Even better is that she is a physical therapist so she has a respected job in the disability comumnity and knows medical professionals who can also get involved. I sent her my self-help booklet in which people have physical disabilities later in life and need help assessing their situations. I am pretty confident that she will share it with many people who could benefit. She will speak at my class for kids and be at the conference on "Social ccapital" December 2.

Wheeling with new wheels

Yesterday I went to a program in which people with and without disabilities performed a dance routine. What a wonderful way to decrease stigma and increase social capital- inclusion! The people said that it's becoming more recognized. Agency staff in the audience said it helped people with autism focus better on tasks. There are so many benefits from this and I hope more programs like this are starting. Mostly, I hope funders including insurances see the value in this. Music is a universal language and has been known to really make big strides for people who are largely non verbal and have intellectual challenges. We must help people without disabilities see the value in this type of program.

Wheeling with new wheels

My life is such a dichotomy. I was at a lunch for Lancaster County Community of churches and I spoked to people at my table about Infobility & my philosophy of independence.I come home and my friend is all smiles, she found a cuute guy whse mom is buying her food. WHAT? Last I checked she had more food then I did. She went out for a smoke I looked down, and sure enough there was the food from her last trip to the food back, still in the bag! No wonder the stigma is so strong for my population.

Wheeling with new wheels

I connected with an established non profit for the purpose of getting my name out. Not only is that happening but I am facilitating a very likely funding request for them. In the past the program was turned down but now with my program on board and more disability projects in the works, I think they will be more receptive. I am eager to use this as an example of how helping another really does help oneself. It is not a typical non-profit but adding a disability component to their existing programs seems to be a good way of broadening horizons of the kids they serve and the community they serve. Some of my plans include: Disability Awareness Day, Working on Wheels, Shopping on Wheels, Wheelchair Basketball, Kids Zone, Matching Legs, Cain of Challenges Newsletter, and school disability programs.

Wheeling wih new wheels

All my life I tried; I learned that you don't just give up you just find other ways. So when I learned that my job may lose three locations due to lack of interest I was concerned. Me being me wanted to take the steps to try to keep that from happening. Of course the person with the power to do something about it isn't really effect so when I offered suggestions they were not looked upon too kindly. It's frustrating since this does not have to happen and the solutions aren't rocket science. I'll just lose my job in lieu of wanting to improve things. Why can't people look at help as a good thing? My natural desire to advocate, seek solutions, and problem solve is sometimes a curse rather than a plus.

Wheeling with new wheels

I have an opportunity talk to nursing home directors about meeting the needs of patients. I will take it part by part using my booklet as a guideline. My first message is that everyone's needs are different. My second message is to examine the categories of social, physical, psychological, family, and community. Look at the problems and consider options. My third part will be to discuss the booklet and use that as my "teleprompter." It will all be from a unique perspective- a person with a real physical disability. I'll also get tons of input from consumers before I give the speech.

Wheeling with new wheels

I spent a lot of time thinking about sharing my coping program with other more established agencies. I decided to ask for different sponsorships for my different types of programs. Since AHEDD is interested in my "Tenacity of Hope" booklet I will reframe the introduction, so a vocational audience can use it as a tool. I will then present the altered part to the agency that has already expressed interest in it. This way the program will have a greater audience and my work will be validated. Giving it away is fine for consumers, but not to large agencies because my work is not validated. Programs in which I show the film on communicating with people with disabilities will eventually be sponsored that will be a win-win situation also. Slowly Infobility will grow.

Wheeling with new wheels

Thirty years I've been sharing my message on disability awareness. There must be a better way. I had a few thoughts on the issue. #1 Finding a well known person; #2 Finding an established business; #3 Spending more money on a website; #4 Spending more money on myself; #5 Improving my image; #6 Improving my confidence; #7 Getting more involved; #8 learning more. Well, some of that is meaningful but unfortunately I'm just now learning that I took too long to learn. It's never too late but by this time in life I should have figured this out; that ads to all my frustration. No one spends a decade telemarketing and no one spends another decade being afraid. That's all in my past and I realize it now so I'll forge ahead based on what I have done.

Wheeling with new wheels

Now it will be interesting to discover who replies to my first email from the conference. I got more cards than I thought I did. There were some potential partners so hopefully something will come through. I learned a lot and spoke with staff from the Lehigh Valley Center for Independent Living. Years ago I wish I had been in a better mindset, the director, Carl Ohdner, would have hired me in a second. Now they've become really successful. I may get help from them to start a wheelchair basketball team in Lancaster.

Wheeling with new wheels

"Infobility" can't help anyone if no one knows about it. Therefore I'm going to have a table to show my literature at the PADES Conference. This is a wonderful opportunity to reach the people who I want to help. Hopefully people will not expect a fancy table displaying pretty pictures photos. What Infobility offers is a decdicated person with a disability willing to go the extra miles to find solutions or at least hear other people's issues and then guide them to getting the help they need. I expect it will be a good experience in the end; these events always are.

Wheeling with new wheels

The first disability program went okay. Of course the boys were hyper but they were more attentive then they were in Cub Scouts. The video could not be shown but everyone participated when I asked questions including: What did you learn? Furthermore, they loved the idea of wheelchair basketball. It is really easy to make that a part of every class, a weekly activity to look forward to. It will be much more difficult for them than they expect. There will be a slew of practices in the classroom at the conclusion of program before we move to the indoor basketball court. I'm glad I found a free incentive for them.

Wheeling with new wheels

I'm glad I rarely give up. After discussing my lesson plans for my disability class at Arbor Place I decided to contact Members First good idea!! the man was very interested and I came up with 10 more program ideas. He sounded very excited and I'm very hopeful. The key is to hook up with an established non-profit. Helping another does help oneself. Then I raised $129 for Arbor so I think they'll give my class and programs a chance.

Wheeling with new wheels

"By helping others you help yourself." I'm living that statement. I'm teaching disability lessons for free at Arbor Place but in return I get to use their non-profit status. They are willing to let me do all my projects and I will get Infobility established. Then I met with Member's First who's also interested in Infobility. They seemed to lose interest when I said I had no "price list." Money legitimizes everything but then I tried again and sent an outline on my classes. I told them my plan to do programs at Arbor Place, do some wheelchair basketball, and have a chili cook-off. I expressed an interest in doing these things with other non-profits in order to generate income for them and interest in Infobility and he was on board. I have a good feeling about this- things will finally work.

Wheeling with new wheels

A big health insurance company asked if I wanted to be a resource. I sent my booklet "The Tenacity of Hope." This is a practical guide for coping with physical disability. Should I have offered to meet with the woman first? She'd probably have said there's no time for that. I want people who matter to see that what I have is worthwhile. Thursday I will discuss doing a weekly disability class. That should get the ball rolling. Hopefully I can use their recognized name and get further- regular games of wheelchair basketball will attract attention, I'd love to get a team together like the Freewheeler's in the Lehigh Valley. I will contact them and learn how to do it.

Wheeling with new wheels

I just got my own internet access for my place. I survived going from library, to computer lab, to library day after day. I couldn't wheel all over in winter nor could I do it on Sundays. Now I'll put more thought into Infobility. What I expected to work isn't so I'll make some changes to the plan. I will probably have to work with able-bodied kids first with fun activities and the education part will come on its own. Wheelchair basketball and shopping on wheels will happen first along with some disability programs and projects I want to introduces at Arbor Place.

Wheeling with new wheels

A bank I met at a Business Expo, was interested in Infobility and then asked for my price list in an email. Rather make up one, I just stated the truth- this program is based on donations. Was honesty the best policy in this case? Will I forever lose my 1 and only chance? Since I need to GET Infobility noticed, know I am participating in a volleyball fundraiser and I'd appreciate $$$ for that. I have yet to get a reply because it's a significant amount of money. Did I do the right thing? Other people would have done it differently.

Wheeling with new wheels

PennDot rules for inspection of adapted vans is that the driver goes to a place where the technicians have a special certification. It doesn't matter if the guy never drove anything with hand controls. Well, I finally found someone nearby who was going to enlist the local van installation person to drive the van. He calls and said Penndot refuuses to allow him to do that, I should go to the company who installed the controls in my van. I told him the company wasn't certified to do any inspections. I called them to check and they thought I was nuts. I called someone else who wasn't willlng to do it but told me of a company who would. I am going to Penndot personally to teach the men why their rules make no sense. They'll never have to abide by there own rules so why should they care? They don't!

Wheeling with new wheels

Friday I attended a business expo in my area. I got 87 cards and followed up with people the next day. I got a few polite responses. I realize this is not the route to take, however, there were 2 staff from vocational agencies both of whom I had interesting conversations. That is the route to take with Infobility. Since it's broad, I can create work for individuals who are motivated to do so (enclave employment). I am eager to receive the replies from those people who I met Friday.

Wheeling with new wheels

One would think that taking initiative is a good thing. It shows skills such as motivation, resourcefulness, problem solving all normally good things. However, in my case it results in resentment, political incorrectness and people feeling threatened. I get in trouble for doing more than others do and I probably do a better job of it. It's happened so many times and it just happened again. I thought it was merely being helpful instead it may result in being fired. I'm chomping at the bit to find something, anything that would be meaningful. This is my passion so I can't and won't give up. Something has to happen eventually. "Throw up enough spaghetti and eventually something's got to stick."

Wheeling with new wheels

It's sad- advocacy and employment are just not important topics to the people who they should be important to. I could have had the chance to address people with mental challenges. When I suggested them I was told "sorry, no interest." The compliant client is more desirable than the one who speaks his/her mind. Imagine if consumers actually practiced assertiveness and believed that the opinions did count. Why implement a topic if there's no interest? Because there may be if it's done regularly and with food incentives. Unfortunately we mostly just end up doing the same topics that are not educational just entertaining.

Wheeling with new wheels

I agreed to have a table at a health fair. Hopefully I will meet someone who is with a non-profit and interested in getting involved with a program like mine. I did not contribute right away because the last expo was very poorly attended. I think it will be better this time. At any rate, I will make it a good experience for me as I always do. This will be a test to decide if it's worth puursuing or not. It's noot really what people need so I should work it backwards and study needs of Lancaster.

Wheeling with new wheels

Today I spoke with the director of the Office of Aging. I was horrified by the way a caseworker was communicating with my friend who is a consumer. I was sad that she saw nothing wrong with being spoken to in such a condescending manner since it was always that way. The director apologized and said they do include disability sensitivity in their trainings. Unfortunately it is just touched on and rarely remembered or implemented. It needs to be emphasized and role playing should be done. I mentioned "The 10 Commandments of speaking with someone with a disability." The director expressed interest in scheduling the film once there is more time. Without the PA Budget being passed caseworker jobs are not being filled and they are working overtime.

Wheeling with new wheels

PennDot, with their nonsense rules, has tried again to make my life miserable. I need an inspection but there are new rules in which people with vehicles that have hand controls must go the specialized aoto mechanics for the sticker. I am sure anyone with a van like mine can realize the problem before saying the word "inspection." There are very very few automechanics able to drive a vehicle with hand controls like mine. On the filp side, there are even fewer installation companies who also complete inspections. So should I go to the guy on the corner who hangs a shingle that he does special inspections? What if he drives my van into a work bench? That exact thing has happened at a huge service center. When I called PennDot my call was repeatedly rerouted to the incorrect department. So I decided to call the installation company in Dauphin. I was given the name of who they use- disaster averted. I hope the average person doesn't call the 800 people on the aproved list.

Wheeling with new wheels

Every day this month (and every other) I will do something for Infobility. Today I made an appointment with the second agency who programs for consumers. I will also be at a Latino networking event where I will finally meet up with the guy who's running for magisterial justice in my district. He has many contacts and will hopefully get me business so I can generate interest among professionals in the Lancaster Community. I reserved a rom in the library for a general presentation in March. By then I should find attendees, there was the last time I did it in this library. I'm also going to a breakfast for entrepreneurs and possibly an expensive presentation at Shady Maples.

Wheeling wth new wheels

I figured out a good way (let's hope so)to generate interest from consumers. I wrote the story of my friend who lives in the apartment upstairs and it came out rather well. I always believed that everyoe has something to offer so now I will prove that statement by really taking the time to get to know people. Hopefully they will be inspired to get involved with Infobility. I will compile a dozen or so stories and call it "Stories of Life Challenges from people with Personal Challenges." Like the Chicken Soup for the Soul series but I don't have the rights to that name.

Wheeling with new wheels

I'm attending a forum on employment in Philadelphia on Saturday. I plan on meeting and learning from the speakers then sharing all of this information when I return to Lancaster. October is Disability Employment Awareness Month. I have a handout for employers and individuals. Hopefully this will generate interest and I will meet individually with people starting October. It's so hard to overcome challenges and be pleasant when you have a disability and you're unemployed. I have a friend who is just really mad at the world. There's no way that doesn't spill over to prospective employers. I wish I could find him a job since that is the answer.

Wheeling with new wheels

A good way to improve on something is to take a class; to gain credibility one should have a personal experience with it. Therefore, I am enrolled in my third entrepreneuial course one of my goals will be to encourage consumers to think about starting a small buiness. I'm excited to use Infobility as my exammple as well as my goal. I will meet people in the community who may be interested in a program as well. It looks like the part of helping consumers will be more active than reaching bussinesses. Both goals will still remain.

Wheeling with new wheels

Tomorrow I have my first two Infobility meetings with people who represent the Lancaster community. I'm doing it differently this time; I will gain exposure through my involvement with popular local events. My website will start with a simple wordpress but it will become a full fledged site. I certainly have done enough projects and programs to validate my skills. The one thing I really do not have is a following. People need to want to share their stories and ideas because that is the only way this will be successful.

Wheeling with new wheels

We're (Nicole and me) are ready to roll! My apartment manager suggested I see the Marketing Manager at Housing Development Corporation about Infobility. The lady could not have been nicer! She walked into a room, sat down, and wanted to hear all about it. Not only was she interested but she's going to connect me with someone else at her level. I was worried about not getting a following and almost quit hoping to interest consumers. Now I'll have more consumers than companies so that part of Infobility will exceed the first! I'm very glad that I made the effort to meet with her.

Monday, August 10, 2015

Wheeling with new wheels

I finished an audiobook on marketing. I got a few ideas but now I must implement them. I have no following but I am involved with some groups that have sizable ones. I hope to volunteer all over and that would be a good way to meet people and help good causes. I asked if I could do trash removal after a big country music event. Monday my favorite radio station will be at the Mall sponsoring a job fair. I can meet companies and collect business cards there. In a month I'll find folks, concentrating now on doing, offering, and presenting things because "if you build it, they will come."

Thursday, August 6, 2015

Wheeling with new wheels

I volunteered to do a 6 minute presentation on Infobility. At first I was worried that I would not have enough so I was going to shift focus to mainly discuss "Driving for Independence." Strangely enough the leaders did not want me to discuss o even mention their program unless it was their idea. It turns out that I couldn't include them cause they haven't done enough. As usual, once I began not only did I have more than enough pictures to describe my own events but I really enjoyed creating the entire slideshow. I am glad I chose to show Infobility because I think this program of mine has been happening quietly for too long and it's time others know what it is about in order to generate interest.

Wheeling with new wheels

I attended a cultural diversity program. Of course disability wasn't mentioned but fit into every theory. I spoke of my disability population as having similar experiences as that of African American and Latino. Both of then are under represented at everything, rarely do they attend even something by their own people. Some people were interested in what I said and I am contacting a few. We may eventually get a "Time Bank" started, since people only think of money as a value for a service. Hopefully I will work with a few like minded people. I need many people interested and motivated to be involved.

Wheeling with new wheels

It is disheartening how much advantage some people with disabilites allow just for the attention of another; it is worse to watch it happen. The person may excuse the behavior for any number of reasons but no one should get themselves in such a situation. Attendant care is meant for that reason not relationships. While it is understandable it can qickly spiral out of control into a hurtful experience in which the person takes serious financial advantage and believes they deserve what they take. I have a friend who has that experience and I have allowed some of that to happen with myself. The longer it continues the harder it is to end.

Wheeling with new wheels

Last night I met a lawyer who is running for district magistrate. He is very connected and also interested in disability issues. He would be the perfect person to help me restart Infobility. I don't need money I just need a name of someone influential so people will give this program credibility. My friend whose husband is part of an established company will also give me venue ideas. Once I do this, it's not new, I should be fine with growing it. I may even be able to get a few cleaning contracts for the man I said I'd help with his business. August 2 is my first real day. Since my parents didn't want me marketing my sister's books I'll do my own thing. It's the perfect day.

Wednesday, July 29, 2015

Wheeling with new wheels

I may be restarting Infobility full time. I have a friend who I work with on a fundraising committee. Our ideas keep getting rejected and it seems like we're just "spinning our wheels." The leader wants to file non-profit papers but the process is costly, involved, and it won't guarantee the program being awarded grants. I had 2 big experiences woring for a disability proogram and I know I can do just as good if not better than these leaders did. Heck, I have sppent 3 years doing the work I just didn't do anything officially. It is time to change that.

Wheeling with new wheels

I just had lunch with n old physical therapist. She says she gets mad when people in public are illogical, as in talking to her instead of the disabled individual next to her. It's interesting to hear other perspectives. Unfortunately many many people with disabilities who I went to school with still really don't ever live on their own. How can they be happy with that? Imagine what they are missing. The lady reminded me of me. I had forgotten what I was like, how did I end up like this? On my own completely - in an apartment in Lancaster city but very very socially backwards.

Wheeling with new wheels

I knew it! After the wheelchair visit, I went to my Drive for Independence group. I met someone who said she has a beautiful new wheelchair sitting at home that she can't use since it's the wrong fit. I just said that exact same thing earlier to my wheelchair provider. He was quiet and didn't seem to familiar with this problem because few consumers complain to the right people. Most just smile and then get angry; the problem is that they don't take the next step. That is the one in which they advocate to reach the solution. Well, maybe she will now that she met me.

Wheeling with new wheels

I visited my provider for the second time since I got this new wheelchair. The entire chair was too high and I was certain that this was not what was ordered. Well I wanted to compare the order form written with the order form that came with the chair from Invacare. I was shown Invacare's and noticed that the description chart was horrendous! My provider told me that the company doesn't even offer a description! The form said "low" for the height requirement WHAT? I still say Invacare sent what they had in stock that was most similar. The service man (definitely not his fault) found a way to lower the seat 1 inch and it feels fine. What a nightmare that was for four months! I thought I could just get used to it but in this case it was dangerous to do that since I kept losing my balance, dressing took twice as long and bathrooming took at least 30 minutes and I couldn't put my entire body on the bowl because then I'd never be able to transfer back.

Wheeling with new wheels

A few years ago I discovered a story about a person with a disability who endured a lot in order to be approved to drive. He then was organizing a non-profit to help others like him afford vehicles. When I discovered he was from York, the next town over, I knew I wanted to be involved. Months passed and my attempts to connect never really materialized. Then I was invited to a meeting by the group. I traveled an hour each way but I knew that this was something I would love. I moved closer within Lancaster so it's a 30 minute drive to meetings. I was still not really helping; since I was from Lancaster, I was not familiar with the people and places they discussed. Recently I found my niche and I have become "driven" to make "Drive for Independence" successful. I have gotten them a few big ticket items for their event in August; I created a manuscript for people who want help raising money themselves(consumers must have some skin in the game); I am contributing to a calendar that will be a fundraiser; and I will be creating a cookbook. I'm so happy to be part of this!

Wheeling with new wheels

I like to involve people with severe disabilities who are really overlooked. I offered to make cookies for "Upshift" bake sale (one of my disability groups). I went to a girl who really likes to cook but does not get asked since people would never expect such talent from her. She sounded really enthusiastic and I may serve as her "attendant" in the kitchen; I will certainly learrn a lot from her. I am looking forward to the experience and I know the results will be very tasty. I wonder how many other people are like her.

Wheeling with new wheels

The disability program at the Dental Arts Building went well. More importantly it may lead to other chances for me to "spread the word." I spoke with 2 people from a big networking group- 1 person would be happy for me to incorporate "disability" into a talk he's giving on his real estate business. Another person works with interior design and express interest in my showing her my writing on making homes & office accessible. A third person told me about a meeting the 3rd Wednesday of each month where downtown Lancaster businesses get together; I could plan to present my "Windows Shopping" project there. I finally met the right people so timing is everything.

Wheeling with new wheels

It's really time to get to the bottom of this. I'm so accustomed to learning to get used to things that I don't even voice any concerns with anything. Then when I decide enough is enough and it's time to advocate for myself- watch out. There is no way this type of wheelchair was what I was supposed to get so what really happened? I really believed all the trouble was due to Invacare not caring but, I hear nothing back from CME and I never met a provider I liked. It follows logically that they are the one's who screwed uup. I got the email adress from customer srvice in Ohio and it's time to find out what was really written on that order form and how long my warantee is.

Wheeling with new wheels

I was in the process of helping a girl in a wheelchair get help since she was evicted and her bad landlord kept her chair (probably sold it). I was really making progress on my end, the housing director in Lancaster even requested more information. Suddenly I stopped seeing her. I guess the girl didn't expect any progress to have been made. The contact on the other end had to cancel the appointment he was going to make for her. Suddenly she showed up again and I explained all of this to her. Her new situation has become worse. I wouldn't let her leave my area until I gave her all the info and wrote the contact another time. Maybe it will work out for her someday. now it is just so sad.

Wheeling with new wheels

I am so very excited. I am involved in a group that was developed to help people with disabilities to afford vans. I joined over a year after it began and felt guilty since I did essentially done nothing. A few weeks ago I got $50 donated in grocery gift cards and a $20 gift card from Outback. I hope that Valvoline and Rita's come through. Now I am developing a manuscript to help people fundraise. Since we help people find money but they must work also. People have been calling us but we have had little to offer until now. I remember how I tried to carve a job in which I would help groups to fundraise through Chili's restaurants. The store was not willing to hire me even though I could make them extra business. Now the situation will be just the opposite, people will be seeking out my services. There's always a flip side.

Wheeling with new wheels

There is a man in the next hallway who has attendants who sleep over. I thought he was so impaired that he stays in his room because he can't function. Yesterday I went over to ask a favor from one of his attendants. I saw him playing a complex game on the computer and I said "hi." Today I'm going to give him a flyer and perhaps try a conversation. I'll bet he's smart, seeking friends, and is perfectly capable of managing (somewhat) in the real world. I hate that, the situation is all too common.

Wheeling with new wheels

"Advocacy is the best policy." I know that's not how the phrase goes but in my case I must alter it. I got an oil, lube, filter recently; I can only go where they have a long window to look up at the bottom of the vehicle cause I won't drive it on a lift. I must drive my own vehicle always since a Dodge dealer crashed it into a work bench. So after the initial service I ask for windshield wipers since mine were no good. The man took my debit card and came back with the wipers and card. He then took one look at my situation and said he couldn't install one because the arm is bent then he did the other even though that arm was bent too. I asked for my money back two times and he gave me $9.00. So essentially one wiper cost me 14.63 since he said installation makes it cost more. I called the company in Covington Kentucky in case I wanted to report him. They offered me a refund of $11.99 and said they weren't allowed to charge me an installation fee.

Wheeling with new wheels

I met a 20 year old man with some learning challenges. He was playing the heck out of a piano everywhere he could in downtown Lancaster PA. I talked with him and he told me how much he loves playing, can't afford formal lessons, but can play by ear. I thought for a moment and gave him the name of a man I know who directs the theater program at Millersville University and is really involved with helping to get people with challenges involved in the arts. I had seen him once since I met him but not again so I was ready to touch base with him. I just found out that, due to the connection I gave him, he is now involved in a wonderful music program at Millersville. He must be thrilled. I never saw someone quite as motivated, now he may be on the right path. All it takes is motivation- that's not a lot to ask for, is it?

Wheeling with new wheels

I am slowly but surely making more and more good connections through "ADA Day." It's amazing how many opportunities I became aware of recently. I plan to get to know everyone that I involve with, and invite to, the program. I learned that if people have a role (something specific to do) they are more receptive. Whether that means speaking or making the pasta salad, it increases people's interest. I honestly need help cooking and I have all the ingredients but not the ability to cook. Now we can have something other than granola bars and raw veggies.

Wheeling with new wheels

I'm really working hard at getting attendance for this event. I volunteered at a July 4th picnic to put out some flyers. When I arrived I was instructed to put some flyers on a table under a tent. I went to the location but it was too passive for me to do it that way. I visited a few of the tents and had wonderful conversations with people in each one. I now know people from more groups and already have in mind connections I can make for others. I was never comfortable with putting something on a community bulletin board or calling the media. Now I must work on making a sheet with my various disability programs and also getting a bit of an introduction together. Otherwise people may just come in, turn around, and leave!

Wheeling with new wheels

I plan to get more involved with Lancaster County. My area was awarded $100,000 and they are seeking residents to get involved with surveying the needs in the area. I'm pretty disappointed that, so far, no other people with disabilities were interested in signing up. I must be careful not to be too interested in the program money since I do want to be seen as a team player. It is easy for me to get too wrapped up in my own ideas and not be receptive to others. In the end that will make me(possibly disabled people in general) look badly.

Wheeling with new wheels

My city, like most, have stores that a person with limited mobility can't enter. Therefore, on "First Friday's" I don't have as an enjoyable experience as others. Just seeing the steps in front of the store make me want to go inside to browse that much more. I developed a solution and sent it to the Deputy Director of Lancaster's Economic Development. It's so simple and inexpensive it's begging to be implemented, though I'm sure it will get complicated once it leaves my "hands." I call in "windows shopping" and all it requires is that someone maintain a simple website with a paragraph and the website address of each inaccessible store listed. When the customers calls they will identify their special need so the employee can help them "browse" as if they we in the store. I'm curious as to how the official reacted to the idea. I have nothing to lose by sharing it with her.

Wheeling with new wheels

The disability awareness programs I do are generally free. A few things here and there bring in some $$$. Well, SSDI wants to see tax returns. WHAT? I don't have thirty years worth to show them. It's basically a hobby, however, not to the government. Earning $10000.000 in thirty years must be clearly, thoroughly, carefully investigated or I can go to jail- they are inaccessible so I can't go there. On the flip side, I may finally get to implement "Windows Shopping" in Lancaster. Tomorrow I will write it up and send into the Deputy Director of Economic Development. I wonder what she'll say, never saw anything like it before.

Wheeling with new wheels

I am often underestimated; that upsets me the most. Recently I let a man in my apartment and then he stole my phone, my bus pass, and my keycard. I did a lot of checking on his background and discovered that he was a criminal who possibly jumped bail. I wrote down everything I learned and eventually went to the police...3 times! They were too busy to report my case so I did even more investigation. This morning I finally talked to the lady at the station but I told her it happened a few days ago. I waited cause I thought the man would return my stuff on his own. How naïve is that? Suddenly I look stupid for waiting so long and hopefully the police will not refuse to help due to inconsistencies in my story then get me in trouble. I really did not want to involve the police.

Wheeling with new wheels

I feel like I shouldn't have even said anything about my SSDI. The Boy Scouts Director asked me if I wanted to work or just wanted to volunteer. How could I not want to work? I was concerned that the man would think that I'm unmotivated. Also collecting from the government sends a horrible message about me. I would l love to free myself altogether. I'd never get SSDI back if I needed it although my disability is congenital. I just got 2 packets of information I am obligated to complete about my job history-I just did that! That makes three documents they are requesting; I think they are really making it extra hard.

Wheeling with new wheels

I just got a job largely because of my disability. That is something I'd hate but in this case I'm fine with it. It's with the cub/boy scouts; they seek out diverse people because they want the kids to have diverse learning experiences. I've never worked with this type of program so I am going to be doing some diverse learning too. I used to hate answering questions based on my disability now I'm looking forward to them; bring them on! Asking questions is how one learns. "ASK" is the most valuable word in the English language.

Wheeling with new wheels

My desire to conduct disability awareness programs lead me to meeting a man who owns a cleaning company and wanted marketing help. This will lead me to doing group marketing programs to teach others and generate leads for him. Nothing done is done in vein, everything has a purpose and leads to something else bigger and better. I am going to be able to continue doing marketing groups each with different people from different venues. Life will not be boring for me in downtown Lancaster. Hopefully it will lead to a paying job.

Wheeling with new wheels

I always try to see the flip side of everything- often it stays pretty hidden. Since I'm in a wheelchair people often don't take me seriously. Since I expect that, that sounds pretty negative, I do a lot of research behind the scenes. That avoids making wasted trips or running around on a wild goose chase. A simple example is when an item is not in a store as expected. Why waste the gas and energy? A more complex example is when you try to get information on a person. In this world every place has rules of confidentiality. Regardless of how obvious "right" and "wrong" are, people will not get involved, that's just absolutely infuriating! Recently I met an unsavory character whose story sounded shady. I did some checking and by doing that, there was no need to go 11 rounds with social workers, law enforcement, or government workers. I ended up knowing more than they did anyway. I still hate being underestimated.

Wheeling with new wheels

Why should people with disabilities be hurt just cause they want to help others? When people are down on their luck they just need to come at situations from a different angle-- there's always ways to improve a little. I don't get how the answer is to take advantage of others. On the other hand, some people can really turn their lives around then once they do it's too late. Unfortunately, a life can improve but the trouble doesn't stop. I became friendly with someone who owes money and ran. Finally she turned her life around but the past found her. Why is it so hard for me to give up on people? Maybe it's because I can't give up on myself. Maybe it probably has to do with my disability

Wheeling with new wheels

The preparations for the disability program are progressing. I can tell business owners aren't quite sure what this is all about. However, they know it's a good thing for the community and for them in particular because I am sure to explain that their part their participation whether it's through donations of food, money, or time as a speaker this can generate business for them. At this time I have just enough of everything- food, donations, speakers. However, one can never have enough help so with my friend's help I am/ we are continuing the journey. I am very glad to have her help since she visits the market 3 days a week every week. She seems happy to be involved. Now for the hardest part- getting people to attend.

Wheeling with new wheels

That title is true both literally and figuratively. Literally, I have a new wheelchair and van since the last time I wrote. However, I also have a new lease on life since the last time I wrote. I am going to make yet another go at Infobility. My programs will be in Lancaster and offer fun and facts to people who reside in the community. I will present opportunities to business owners, employers, teens, as well individually empowering people with disabilities. On July 17, I am partnering with Dental Arts to offer a program that will discuss integration of all into the community. I am also learning what would be involved in establishing a wheelchair basketball team. New attitude, new Sue.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- starting groups

My original plan and interest in this blog was to start groups on the topic. Well it is still very much an interest so I am going to seek out consumer service organizations and offer this opportunity. So many people decide it is an impossibility but I think the key is to have people offering support and encouragement. New techniques is also a plus that would result in success. Eventually I can offer the lessons I have designed and meet one on one with people- if they would like. I know that once I start with one, interest will be generated. Perhaps Consumer Advocacy Program will accept my offer. What do people have to lose - but weight?

Workout and weight loss on wheels- fitness not food- for comfort

It is common that when a person is depressed (s)he turns to food. When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These chemicals interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain. They trigger a positive feeling in the body, like morphine. Feelings that follow a run or workout is often described as "euphoric." That feeling, called a runner's high, can be accompanied by a positive and energizing outlook on life. So what if a person turns to exercise for comfort? That would decrease weight-and a whole lot more. Two reasons to get out of depression- exercise and lose weight. Think about the benefits of literally running off depression! Therefore, ice cream is not the only answer.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- workOUT rock climbing

Rock climbing can easily be adapted for people with pysical challenges. If you have a prosthesis use a climbing shoe it can be put over an existing prosthetic foot. Getting to the rock can be difficult because of uneven terrain. Sometimes it is bes not to wear a prosthesis, just a rubber sleeve on the limb. To get the feel of what it’s like to climb and how the muscles work and the leg performs try an indoor climbing wall, there you learn to put on a harness. Some people use a leg designed for Telemark skiing. It has become one of the fastest growing sporting activities. A person can climb to his comfort level thanks to indoor climbing walls and a variety of programs that accommodate all ages and all abilities, including wheelchair users and arm amputees. It is not only a physical activity but cerebral too. It takes patience and planning, and forces the climber to make decisions as one gets to a spot and strategizes where to go from there. Adaptive climbers don’t have the same strength, so some may rely more on their fingers for support.Communication with your belayer is extremely important. Not understanding the terminology can lead to accidents. Top roping means that at the top of the wall or rock there is an anchor where the rope is already looped over it and both ends of the rope hand down. The belayer attaches one end of the rope to their belay device, and the climber ties onto the other end.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- workOUT golf

Anyone can play golf regardless of a physical challenge. A torsion absorber and rotator allow you people with amputations to pivot to finish your swing. If you play with one arm you can swing with both hands. If you’re unable to walk, you can play golf from a seated position from a cart. Just play against par, you can tee up the ball without bending over. Numerous devices exist, including single-rider golf cart accessible on all public courses. Other adaptive devices include the Amputee Golf Grip and Golf Pro which has been designed for people missing one of their hands. This will make it easier to better grip the club. Another device is adaptive gloves and grip aids.

Workoutyt and weight loss on wheels- workOUT canoeing

There are many adaptations available to paddlers including seating, socket that fits over the side of the boat for maximum control and performance. When you are not just rotating from the shoulders but through the whole body and hips as well so when get a forward thrust. Paddlers with quadriplegia can hold themselves upright in the boat by using a spray skirt, a device that is worn around the waist using a gasket that seals out water. The “skirt” is the portion that goes from the torso to cover the cockpit to keep out water. Those with upper-limb amputations or muscle weakness there are a variety of grip adaptations to keep the hand on the paddle, as well as allowing for a quick release when needed. If one wants to be competitive you must submit to weight training all year round to improve muscular balance. Use a stationary rowing machine with an adaptor attachment that simulates single-blade paddling. This has recently been added to the Paralympics as a recognized sport.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- workOUT- swim

Swimming has been considered to be the second most popular sport. As an exercise it can offer anyone a wonderful cardio vascular workout. If you have a disability benefits of being in the water are numerous. It improves joints and promotes independence in movement that can’t always be achieved out of it. It soothes sore joints for those who suffer from arthritis. Water makes you buoyant and supports your weight, spine, joints and muscles. Water provides resistance that’s good for your muscular endurance and for strength training. It increases strength and endurance as well as the heart pumping blood more efficiently. Mentally, fun in the pool decreases stress. It elicits a positive response that improves your attitude. Spending time at the pool with friends increases social interaction Just a general sense of well-being. Adaptive swimming is a hugely popular sport. It's been in the paralympics since 1960. Athletes with disabilities who join swimming clubs benefit from better sport-specific coaching, more rigorous training, more competition in practice, and higher expectations than they are likely to receive in other settings.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- workOUT- tennis

Wheelchair tennis started in 1976 and has grown into a Paralympic sport. It can be played with no modification by anyone who can wheel a chair and move their arms. The one change in rules is that the player who uses a wheelchair gets two bounces of the ball before it has to be hit, instead of one. Chair users need to learn to grip the racquet differently than able-bodied players because they need to hold the racquet and push the chair at the same time. The chair must be pushed with the heel of the hand and the inside of the racquet grip, so the racquet is up and ready. The racquet is held in the dominant hand with four fingers, leaving the thumb free. This leaves the pad of the hand free, giving the player a contact point with the wheel or push rim. But the free hand does the majority of the work on the court, because it is constantly pushing and turning the chair. Strategy for returning serves varies slightly from able-bodied players they must stay further behind the base line. Moving around the court involves reacting, negotiating, and recovering. If you stay at the net, you won’t be able to return long shots. After coming in for the shot, you recover quickly and get back to the hub, always going back and forth- quick movement is important because otherwise they won't be able to reach the ball. You also must turn with your head often. Learn to push with the heel of your hand so the racquet is up and ready.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- workOUT and water ski

Here's a fun sport that can be enjoyed by all in warm weather. One ski can work for amputees with one leg. Some use two skis, or one ski with two legs. Individuals who don't stand use a “sit ski” which can be wide, narrow, or competitive. The sit ski was created by a person who has quadriplegia. All sit-down skiers use a singlewide ski to which a metal-framed cage is attached. The skier sits in a canvas sling that can be adjusted up or down to change the skier’s center of balance and comes in a variety of models to suit the skiers ability level. Those who sit use a singlewide ski which is attached to a metal-framed cage. The skier sits in a canvas sling that can be adjusted up or down to change the skier’s center of balance. They can accommodate those with good stability, poor stability, or use of only one arm. Beginners are accompanied by a which allows a coach, who is in the boat, to give instruction while the student skis.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- workOUT and surf

As the weather warms up the thought of working out, out rather than in may be more appealing. Furthermore, the thought of getting involved with water sports may be just the incentive needed. A wonderful upper body workout is surfing. Having something to ride on is your primary, if you have no intention of standing up to ride waves use a boogie board and kick to move in the water. Once that is mastered use a wave ski (a surfboard that you sit on and paddle with a kayak paddle). People with brain or spinal cord injuries, amputations, and cerebral palsy have a blast. Lay-down paddle boards also work and are fun. If you are able to stand, that type of surfing requires takes more practice and be aware of the size of the board. The bigger, wider, and longer the board the more stability it offers.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- What food means to you.

Food gives us much more than just daily sustenance; it gives us hope, love, and comfort. It shows love through the fancy meals we eat with our relatives during holidays. It shows hope with the ice cream and chocolate we may drown ourselves in when depressed. It shows comfort with the bowl of hot soup on a cold winter day or the pizza we eat with friends at a birthday party. It also shows our spirituality when observing a religious fast or following Jewish kashrut laws. Through thick and thin, food is the one thing that can bring people together in times of need, or even cause new friendships. The meaning of food is the definition of life itself.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- "good" can also mean healthy

Here are just a few cereals to buy. KIX- Kid-tested, nutritionist-approved, this is one low-sugar kids’ cereal to get behind. Give it a grown-up spin by adding blueberries to your crispy corn puff-filled bowl. Not only is the duo delicious, the fruit lends some disease-fighting antioxidants and additional fiber. Special K with Berries- This cereal employs wheat bran to up its fiber count and freeze-dried strawberries for some natural sweetness. The flakes pair well with milk and spoon, but also add iron- and vitamin C-rich base for a sweet and salty trail mix. Shredded Wheat- This cereal is made with just whole-grain wheat and wheat bran—a pure base crying out for fresh blueberries or bananas. In addition to serving up a decent share of hunger-quelling protein and fiber in every bowl, Wheat ’n Bran also provides 20 percent of the day’s phosphorus

Workout and weight loss on wheels- make it up as you wheel

My new wheelchair sits me higher than my old so now every transfer is challenging. I have to be able to raise my torso after a transfer. It's hard but it will get easier in time. For now it makes much more sense to make lifting my torso my regular exercise than lifting my weight. Sometimes I will do both but my advice is to do what is most necessary to you at any given time.

Workout and weight on wheels- Lick your health problems with garlic

1) Garlic could end your hair loss problems because of its sulfur compound, which can treat hair loss. Rub sliced cloves on your scalp, and squeeze or massage in oil with garlic. 2) Garlic makes a great natural remedy to banish unsightly blemishes. Its antioxidants kill bacteria, so rub a clove on the pimple as a topical treatment. 3) Garlic relaxes blood vessels to open blood flow and reduce blood pressure; quell inflammation, protect blood vessels from damage, and more. 4) Garlic on a bandage over the splinter area really works. 5)Garlic has anti-fungal properties which is a means of getting rid of athlete's foot. Crush it and add it to warm water then soak your feet. 6)Hold it or a cold sore; it can help to reduce pain and swelling. There are even household problems that this item solves.

Workout and weight loss on wheels-

While sport has value in everyone's life, it is even more important in the life of a person with a disability. This is because of the rehabilitative influence sport can have not only on the physical body but also on rehabilitating people with a disability into society. Many people were competitive athletes and are depressed until they realize they can actively compete again. It offers independence, strength training and for some it is most importantly a means of socialization. The number of people with disabilities involved in sport and physical recreation is steadily increasing around the world with organized sports for disabled athletes may be divided into three main disability groups, sports for the deaf, sports for persons with physical disabilities, and sports for persons with intellectual disabilities.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- mushrooms :meal or medicine?

There are many foods that have a double purpose; in addition to filling your stomach they also fight or prevent illness. Here are some examples- Some mushrooms can kill viruses, bacteria, yeast, cancer cells, and others regenerate nerves. Broccoli and tomatoes fight colon cancer. They are rich in antioxidants. Tomatoes should be cooked in a sauce or paste and eaten with oil. Spinach is filled with the anti oxidants that decrease the chance of macular degeneration.Cabbage is rich in fiber, which improves the performance of the digestive system. The fiber in it acts as an excellent detoxifier. The stomach and intestines are thoroughly cleansed. It also has a mild laxative effect which helps to stimulate bowel movement and helps to prevent constipation. Red pepper, particularly chili peppers, have capsaicin. This adds heat but also relieve body pain. Furthermore, it is a good source of vitamins E, vitamin C and plaque in arteries.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- drink 8 glasses

The most basic tip to someone who wants to be healthy is to drink 8 glasses of water a day. Even fresh fruits and vegetables must be washed with tap water. However, where you get your source of the beverage is debatable. Though most people are aware of the benefits of bottled water, it is meaningful to mention it here. Tap water can be filled with lead from plumbing, microorganisms in the water from sewage, or cancer causing particles from illegal dumping. Bottled water production is strictly monitored and regulated to make sure that water is clean and free of contaminants. Clean and safe tap water is not always available making bottled water highly in demand. Contamination can be due to natural disasters, illegal dumping, or lead in plumbing. Bottled water can be lifesavers because this is clean and safe to drink.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- "Cleaning House"

The subtitle is in quotes because the house is actually your body. To do this you won't need Spick and Span but you will need to follow special directions and you may a complicated proceedure known as detox. However, for now I suggest we keep it simple. 1)Consider using organic food. These are free of insecticides, pesticides & additives. 2)Choose to eat what is in season and so not need to be shipped in from another locaion. 3)Eat fresh; they are less likely to be exposed to light, heat,& oxygen. 4)They should be lightly cooked (dry fried, grilled & broiled). Boiling and roasting looses nutrients. 5)Be cautious of labels that say low sodium, low fat & high fiber. 6) Eat whole grains (rice, bread, pasta). 7) Eat sustainable fish. These are caught by fisherman who are ecologically and economically conscious.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- comfortable and healthy

Healthy foods don't have to be obscure nor lack taste. Consider typically popular ones then dress them up. This is especially important for kids who are often picky eaters. Macaroni and cheese into a healthier dish by covering it with crumbs of broccoli and basil or mixing it thoroughly with vegetables. Spaghetti and Meatballs with whole wheat pasta or spaghetti squash. Vegetable pizza instead of the usual red sauce. Mashed potatoes with cauliflower mixed in (it's the same color). Chili made with turkey or chicken. Fried chicken baked in the oven with cornflake crumbs. Lasagna with layers of zucchini instead of noodles. Grilled cheese with whole wheat toast made in the toaster not in a fry pan. Sneak avocado in the brownies or zucchini also works. Ice cream sundaes with yogurt. Ideas are endless!

workout and weight loss on wheels- Have your cake and eat it too.

Save sugary desserts for special occasions and less often so when you do have them it will be a treat. There are so many other good tasting items you can eat like fruits and berries instead. However, if you insist on having your cake and eating it too try the following: using apple sauce as an ingredient, swap white flour with whole wheat flour; cover it with whipped cream or merengue; sub natural sugar for confectioners; soy or coconut milk in the frosting; fresh beets add texture and color; fill it with blueberries. As for the topping, cover it with fruits and berries.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- Amputee and yoga

It teaches different breathing techniques useful for dealing with pain; mainly focusing. It teaches that parts of the body are addressed not the body as one entity. I teaches ways to exercise joints and keep them healthy and how to avoid further damage and the need for knee replacement. It also reaches shifting your weight on both legs; balance is important for amputees cince the side the limb is on (for leg amputtees) is lighter. Avoiding putting weight on the right leg causes limping and throwing the body out of alignment. Yoga also exercises the mind and soul. As an amputee spiritual and mental exercise are important also; it is easy to fall into “poor me mode." After yoga falling asleep is easier cause you lear to relax.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- Continuity counts

Missing a day once in awhile is not the end of the world nor is cheating with a dessert. It is important to forgive yourself if that happens and move on. However if you stop the exercise routine all together or stray from the diet completely consequences will be grave. You will be rendering all of your hard work useless, the results can really set you back psychologically, and it will be increasingly difficult to restart your routine. Although I only use one small 5 pound weight I can really tell that since I haven't been watching television regularly, I haven't been doing my strength training. I have a brand new wheelchair that is harder to transfer on and off of than my old one. I have been taking longer and exerting more energy than before. I must get back to my routine. If I don't only I suffer.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- a healthy holiday

Passover is a Jewish holiday which celebrates the Jelish people being freed fromm Egyptian slavery. People who observe the holiday strictly follow strict dietary guidelines for 8 days. As the story goes, once the Jewish people were freed, they had no time to allow their bread to rise. Therefore, we replace bread, grains, and flour with matzoh (a cracker) and matzoh meal when baking. Foods such as pasta, baked goods, cereal, and pizza were prohibited for years. They have since been replaced with versions that simulate the original foods but the taste is different as is the ingredients. People eat a lot of fish, chicken, meat, vegetables (not corn or peas)anf fruits. Wheight loss is usually a residual effect of this holiday.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- fitness programs

This does not happen enough- especially for people with challenges. It would be so easy to plan and implement. Not only would it be an exercise class but there is also a social component to it also. Both parts are extremely important for those who do not get out much and do not take care of their bodies as well as they should. Planning involves just contacting a few local agencies for people with challenges. Speak to the program managers and explain that you would like to work with a few residents in their homes monthly (or however often). Submit an outline with the general objective of improving people's physical activity. This may include merely renting videos from the library on various workouts. Each "class" should include introductions, discussion on the importance of exercise, personal stories (if desired), the activity, and a socialization time. This should be documented weekly by consumers and by you. The better the documentation the more likely the program will be picked up by a larger entity and funding will follow.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- honesty healthy

Those 2 words are often not used together when it come to this topic. Often we say what we think people want to hear. Sometimes we even lie to ourselves; if we continue to do that what happens? I just finished a food awareness program with 7 year olds. They insisted that they always ate healthy snacks. Then the one girl said the Frosted Flakes was healthy. That works for awhile but what happens when she grows up and becomes diabetic? At some point we must be accurate with what we eat and how much we exercise. That's why I believe strongly in a food journal because if we write it down that we can't pretend it doesn't exist.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- in the beginning

Prior to string this blog I had the idea of starting a cooking program for people with challenges. I am no cook but I was continually striking out when surfing the net in search of help for people with disabilities who want to cook but need adaptions. Unfortunately, I could not start that because I was just one person and I can't have a program for myself. I decided to read books, write a few lessons, and start this blog. While I am enjoying this experience, I still wanted to start a class....until now. It turns out that I won't have to start one, one is already starting. The person contacted me so with the support of one other person I will be working from both ends- organizing and learning. Eventually, this blog and the lessons will become part of the overall program. A comprehensive program that will teach cooking skills and also offer and education component about food awareness.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- eating in pairs

Two foods that go together- you may give examples of peanut butter and jelly spaghetti or spaghetti and meatballs, but you would be incorrect. The pairings are for health reasons. Many foods heal the body but f two specific foods are ingredients in the same meal, the healing power may be higher. There has been proof that the following foods eaten at the same time results in bigger success. Black beans and rice- the first is a good source of iron and the second is vitamin C but if they're eaten at the same time, the body will absorb he iron times faster. Tomatoes and olive oil- they raise a body's anti oxidant level so make that bruschetta on toast for an appetizer and you eat a tasty and healthy appetizer. Dark chocolate and apples- The first is an anti-oxidant and the second is an anti-inflammatory. Together you may offer the same effect as blood thinners. Tumeric and black pepper- use them as a marinade on chicken. There are many more combinations.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- seizing seizures with food

Following a special high-fat low carbohydrate diet, called the Ketogenic Diet. This is suggested after several failed attempts to use medication. The main guideline is to provide 3 to 4 grams of fat for every 1 gram of carbohydrate and protein. Usually the body uses carbohydrates for energy in this diet fats become the primary fuel. The goal is higher ketone levels which lead to improved seizure control. The diet is not suggested for adults, due to limited food choices; however, it has worked with adults. It works well for children with focal seizures, but will not result in becoming seizure free. Before implementation, it must be discussed with a doctor. Foods such as butter, heavy whipping cream, mayonnaise, and oils are best. Restrictions on carbohydrates and protein are crucial, therefore meal preparation is important. Even toothpaste may be prohibited. It is best for the hospital to get the child started in case of a negative react. Usually there is at least a 50% or greater reduction in the number of seizures. Children continue the usual seizure medicine but often it is in fewer doses.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- How can I help YOU?

In the interest of helping you I'd like to know why you visited this site? I enjoy doing research so if there's anything you want to know please let me know. I can save you time and I'm sure others would benefit also. Therefore, you are certainly not being selfish by requesting a topic for "conversation" rather just the opposite. I recently spoke with a friend who is interested in the connection between diet and seizures. If her child or your child or you could eat specific foods rather than take medicine wouldn't that would seem the best option? At least having the knowledge of dietary options.

Workout and weight loss while on wheels- don't eat out... cook out

Sure, choosing to grill you food may reduce the caloric value of your restaurant meal but to truly decrease the meal just cook out. Consider these meals: IHOP's Grilled Tilapia, Outback's New Zealand Lamb, Ruby Tuesday's Rib Eye, Red Lobster's Plank Salmon, TGI Friday's Pulled Pork, Chevy's Grilled Chicken Fajita's, Applebee's Steak Fajita's, Olive Garden's Grilled Sausage and Pepper's, and Chilli's Smokehouse Burger. You'd think these meals are low calorie choices on the menu. However, The least fattening among those choices in 695 calories and it increases to 2310...for just one meal! Your stomach will be just as satisfied with these meals: classic ribs, balsamic lamb chops, teriyaki hot dogs, stuffed meat loaf, grilled fish tacos, and blackened chicken and mango salad. The calories range from 270 to 520. What is even better is that since you are cooking these meals you know exactly what the ingredients are.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- smaller is better

If you're snacking chances are, you aren't famished so why eat a whole bag or container of something? Just take a small amount, a handful, rather than have the whole box or bag. You'll feel just as satisfied if the size is small. Chances are, if you eat too much you will feel badly psychologically and physically. Spend a small time, 5 minutes, outside every day. That will equal almost a half hour a week. Check in regularly with just 1 person, that's all you need to stay accountable and active. Smaller is better.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- the best for last.

Ever since I was a child I would eat the carrot and broth before the noodles. I would then look forward to all of the noodles. I do that a lot and don't even realize I'm doing it. I start every meal with the most healthy item on my plate may not taste as good and then I have something yummy to look forward to at the end. I find that that works in life too, get something less desirable out of the way (like exercise?)and then go watch television. Another idea is to clean the house first or in increments and take fun breaks in between- so it doesn't seem as bad. Sometimes the habits we learn early are the best ones.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- Limit your choices

Why have unhealthy food as an option? Why tempt yourself? Just replace all dried fruits and fruit juices with whole fruit and other healthy alternatives. Eventually you'll encourage others to do the same. Surely you can find some fruits that taste good to you. So many times we just aimlessly choose the chips and dip over the orange. You learned to eat junk food; you can learn to eat healthy. If you are really tempted to choose a packaged food or drink, read the label see, you are likely to be surprised. Do not make these packaged foods an option either. Most everything that comes in a package comes fresh too. Widen your horizons, your palate, your mind. You will become a healthier, happier, more stronger you. Soon people will be giving you positive feedback. The lesson is that happiness, and everything else, is a choice- choose wisely.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- How healthy is ham?

In terms of healthy it is not one of the best meat options. Ham provides protein, some vitamins, and some minerals but it is high in sodium and fat. Choose extra lean version over regular version, this will save you both fat and calories. Look for varieties that are low in sodium like deli meats, these have increased nutritional value of the food and no nitrates. These varieties of ham are better for you as well. Use lean ham to make a protein-packed sandwich, or chop it into small pieces and add it to your breakfast omelet. Add ham chunks to a pasta salad, or scatter pieces over a tossed green salad.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- making untasty, tasty

I have 12 chicken pieces. Now I have never met a chicken dinner I haven't liked. However these are so spicy that when I bite into them I taste nothing but fire. I'd rather have my teeth pulled than waste food. So, what do I do? First I gave them a thorough wash and scraped and scraped. Then I submerged them in honey, then in salad dressing...still spicy. I have decided to make the most of the "flavor" so I'll cut it up in pieces and mix in with noodles on some days and rice on others. There's never a problem without a solution for it. That goes for cooking and life too.

Workout and weight loss on wheels-plan to slim down

The whole process is a lot of work but it's easier if you structure your life in a way that will lend to losing weight. Here are some examples: 1) Plan your day so that you eat more in the mornings, less food later, and nothing after diner. The earlier it is the more your body's metabolism will increase. Since the earlier it is the more energy your body needs it make sense to switch lunch with dinner by making it the bigger meal. 2)The key is activity, even if what you are doing is usually done laying down, watching television, have movement while doing it. Lift weights, use a treadmill, do stretches. Eating and working is usually done sitting so limit it to 2 hours. 3) Don't spend a lot of time doing electronic messaging during the hour your go to bed. You need to have pure motionlessness while sleeping so your have optimal functioning in the morning.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- specific is realistic

Often we talk about goals, especially around the new year. However, in order for the goal to be achieved it should be verbally stated, committed to paper, and posted in a few of the places you look on a regular basis. Remember to be as specific as possible if you want to be successful. If it's in a few places you are bound to see it so you can't say you forgot about it. If it's specific and includes the time of day and number of times you will do the activity you can't find an excuse not to follow it. For example "At 7pm on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday I will walk around the block five times then increase it every two weeks." This identifies a specific goal for your activity, how much it will change, and when it will happen. Write it down, add a deadline, and share it with others. Structure your day to follow that routine and it will soon be automatic.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- get your zzz's

You've heard that sleep is important. It is more than just a good thing, it is crucial. Sleep to restores brain chemicals and rests the body. Research has proven that the brain organizes and stores memories during sleep. Lack of sleep can affect our daytime functioning, hormonal balance, appetite, and immune system. We have internal clocks that tell us when we need to sleep. They cause us to feel alert when the sun is up and drowsy when it’s down. We are sleepiest between midnight and 6 a.m. , and between 1 and 3 p.m. So in addition to working out and eating healthy, when you are planning to work on something that requires a great deal of learning and thinking, go to bed early.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- Kitchen Accesible

It doesn't take a lot of money just creativity. Since I use a wheelchair, that's my perspective. 1) Do most of your prep work at a table near the kitchen. In order to have knee space just remove cabinet doors and move the items inside or place them on a cart in a room nearby. 2)Since it's hard to see while sitting, hang a mirror above stove burners to supervise cooking from a seated position. 3)Use carousel trays; these make 360-degree turns to store a lot in one place.4) Have linoleum or tile floors since it's easier to roll over and clean. 5) If purchasing a new stove, make sure nobs are in front. 6)If purchasing a new fridge, get one with the freezer on the bottom. If using an oven/stove is too hard use a toaster oven or microwave. 7) purchase a rolling utility cart to allow you to move a heavy pot of water. 8) Arrange ingredients and tools to efficiently direct your flow of activity. 9)Tools, seasonings, and pots can surround your work area. 10)Leave items, such as dry goods, vegetables, and spice racks to make it easier.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- "better functioning" food

Some foods are known to improve the body's functioning or improve one's sex life. Foods high in sugar and saturated fat can spur inflammation. They cause over-activity in the immune system, which can lead to joint pain, fatigue, and damage to the blood vessels. To counter act the damage choose beets, fish, tomatoes, peppers, berries, and garlic. Food with aphrodisiac tendencies are rich in unsaturated and low in saturated fat, they are good for your heart and arteries. Foods that keep a heart beating keep blood flowing; men with underlying heart disease are twice as likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction so eat avocados, almonds, bananas, seafood, and grapefruit.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- limit the choices

If you want to lose weight just be logical. Sure there's temptation of unhealthy food everywhere but there's just one rule to follow. Choose to remove yourself from the situation and choose another. Here are some meal examples, when in the grocery store rather than walk up the junk food aisle just skip it. When cooking for the family rather than watch your kids eat chips and friend chicken just don't cook that type of meal. When selecting restaurants don't offer to eat at one that sells fast food just chose a local diner. Here's an exercise example, if you are tempted to skip a workout. You know that the hardest part is choosing to get started so just do it automatically. Don't make it a conscious choice and over-think it. Consider it as if it's part of getting dressed. Eventually it will become automatic. Once you feel the desired effects, it will become a welcome routine. Watch television while doing it, the thoughts you have should be distracting. Anything that will cause you to focus on "the pleasant" not "the undesired." Try limiting your choices and see what happens.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- Involving everyone is better.

Tips for improving fitness can benefit the entire family. If the whole family is involved then it is more likely that the goal will be reached. Also it can be more enjoyable because if you make it a game you can challenge each other to come up with as many types of activities as possible. Therefore ask everyone to come up with two easy ways to add activity around the home and in the neigh-borhood. Perhaps you can even get neighbors involved. Another challenge is to come up with something green to eat every day. Make a trip to the store to find items. Surely you will all expand your palate. Third, determine ways to reduce noise in order to help them improve sleeping habits. As with anything, there is more success and solutions to choose when more than one person is challenged to come up with answers.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- Experiment on yourself

"Experts" offer a lot of ideas directly or indirectly about losing weight. They report proof based on studies so why not try a few of those ideas? Everyone's different so they may not all work successfully for you but perhaps some will so why not try? Do not expect it to offer immediate results so test it out over a week but you have nothing to lose. One suggestion is about the importance of sleeping 8 hours a night. Sleeping adds to your overall attitude and performance during the day. It also helps medically since The body needs time to regenerate itself, digest your food intake, and manufacture the minerals it is meant to such as magnesium, potassium, and melatonin. Experiment on yourself by keeping your bedroom 2 or 4 degrees cooler at night. See if it helps you fall asleep and stay asleep. Another idea is based on an important diet principle regarding portion size. Eating less is more than half of the solution to losing weight. So it's logical that if we use smaller cups, plates, and serving sizes we will eat less. Do we really eat with our eyes? If this is true then the big portions at restaurants are some of the reason for our weight gain. There are a lot of experiments you may be pleasantly surprised after trying a few times.

Wheeling through your life- easy changes

Easy changes are possible to make, we don't always realize this because we are accustomed to usual choices. This is true in the case of eating out. There really are many other foods we can eat before a meal besides bread. So even if you are at a restaurant, when offered complimentary bread with a meal, ask for a healthy alternative or simply pass. Another simple change is to eliminate one type of red or processed meat from your diet for good. Hot dogs, frozen meat loaf dinners, bacon, canned stew, etc. They require strong stomachs and may leave you feeling ill. Often these foods don't even taste very good. Once we're in the habit of actively choosing healthy foods you will feel better inside and out. It will seem unnatural to eat meals we used to have and you probably will not even miss them. Eventually you may even wonder why we even made such unhealthy choices.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- see just the positive

I life to see and do things from the positive angle. Therefore, when you receive junk food rather than putting it in the nearest trash can, take it to a day care or find a place where people can benefit from it. Once it "has a good home" remember how much better it is in that location rather than your own stomach. Remember the positive reaction you felt. At first it may be ambivalence but eventually you will see it as a positive experience. When you see a friend making a good decision about what to eat, give credit and encouragement. This is a compliment and hopefully it will spurn a discussions and maybe even a new friendship. Rather than saying " Avoid using the snooze button on your alarm for the next week." Think of how good it would be to start your day right away. After all, what is the benefit of delaying the inevitable?

Workout and weight loss on wheels- motivated to move

There is some sort of movement you can make every day. Whether it is in the form of walking up and down the stairs to your kids rooms to the basement, or walking up and down the aisles of the grocery store; it is movement thus, it counts as exercise. Consider this schedule- Monday- laundry, Tuesday- cleaning, Wednesday- shopping, Thursday- yoga, weight lifting, stretching, or some sort of planned exercise, Friday- dancing. If you have a dog that surely covers your exercise quota. Choose a motivation to move more and put it to music, make it a poem, repeat it as mantra. Eventually you won't have to consciously remind yourself it will be automatic. Remind yourself of it daily with a photo of yourself doing it or find a quote about the importance of movement.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- temptations

Carbohydrates produce a natural, physical high caused by dopamine. Once released the body wants more of it. Eating carbs has a similar effect on the brain's pleasure center as cocaine. This is why you my start thinking about pasta, rice, bread while you are doing your taxes. Symptoms of withdrawl include anxiety, headache and irritability. Salt addiction is due to the reaction your body has with the reward center of your brain making it hard to control your intake. Gum chewing can give an addictive feeling and gives some of the same habitual feelings as with drugs. Coffee is a stimulant and if skipped you can become sluggish and headache, thus, caffeine is very addictive. This goes for tea, energy drinks, soda & chocolate. Low - fat foods leave you overeating since you think they're less calories you end up eating more. Actually, these foods may not be nutritious and include additives. Chocolate releases serotonin into the brain and leaves you with a happy feeling. This effects brain cells related to mood, appetite, social behavior and sexual desire we crave. When sugar enters the bloodstream the pancreas releases insulin that gives you a sugar high. Cheese contains opiates, morphine, and casein in tiny amounts, all which have an addictive affect. Ice cream is delicious, and is packed with sugar (see above). Pizza has MSG is as an ingredient in the dough. This tricks the brain to believing that what you are eating tastes so great that you want more of it.There's more but - it is possible for you to get a fast food fix.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- the temptation

Many people who have disabilities do not cook independently. Instead they may opt t have meals at the local McDonald's. However, keep in mind the following information. Those who eat a lot of meals at fast food restaurants may become overweight and become insulin resistant. Despite all the attention to healthy there has been an increase in cutomers over the lasat 30 years. Regardless of some of the healthy choices, most of the foods are high in fat, sugar, sodium, cholesterol, calories and low in fiber, vitamins, and nutrients. People need to think about how often they eat out at these places. A single meal contains enough calories for the whole day. Suggestions when eating are ask for mayo on the side, choose baked potato, broiled not fried and/or wraps not burgers. One cheeseburger is 1,020 calories and 65 grams of fat. Nutritional information is not readily available, some may be on the website. Diet can be a factor contributing to poor growth resulting in physical problems, brain development, or motor skills development.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- the temptation

Food is the worlds strongest addiction. Otherwise, choosing a diet of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and fish that has proven to lower the risk of heart attack by 47% would be a no - brainer. If foods are guaranteed to improve your health, then why are fast foods muti million dollar industries? If only healthy food could be marketed differently to appear more apppealing and result in the more popular choice. It is a shame that a large number of people who are health concious didn't start out to be that way. After experiencing serious health risks, they were strongly encoraged by doctors to change their food intake. The most important thing is not why the person suddenly became aware of the detriments of bad foods but the full future they can look forward to due to their choices of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, fish and poultry.

Workout and weight loss on wheels -fitness to reduce pain.

Bed rest may be doctor's orders for pain management but studies prove that movement through excercise is a better prescription. It is important to keep muscles flexible in order to increase the pain threshold. Some simple stretches include lie on a carpet and put your legs on the couch; lie on your belly on top of an exercise ball; lie on your back holding your knees to your chest; stand up and bend your knees (squat). Other activities include yoga, swimming or walking. Three movements that are not recommended include running, jumping, basketball and golf (if you have back pain).

Workout and weight loss- schedule yourself

An important activity to successful weight loss is documentation of food eaten. It's not just about what you eat but also when you eat. Schedule your snacks and meals are a good use of your time. Here are some of the reasons why: 1) You will consciously be making good food choices rather than blindly eating whatever fattening snacks are within reach. 2) By planning ahead, you will have time to gather ingredients necessary for a healthy meal rather then ordering a cheeseburger and fries at McDonalds because there is no food in the houe and no time to cook. 3)Eating every four hours results in more even hunger levels. Not eacing breakfast or lunch results in being ravenous for dinner. 4)Documentation results in having a more structured day; you know you will have a break at a designated time so you know whether or not to beging a long project or when to stop for a bit between. 5) When you know what time you will be eating you can focus on other things during the day; food won't be a distraction which can be quite common.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- invest your time & energy

All good things take time and energy. When you put in a little more, you will feel better physically and figuratively. One example is not just buying junk food when making a quick contribution. If the item must be edible, consider giving nuts. They are packed with protein. Second is eating plant based proteins regularly. Our body must get 9 amino acids through food because our bodies can't manufacture them. Research what plant based sources give you protein. Then research how they can be used in regular foods you eat. When you think of protein the first thought that comes to mind is beef, pork, and veal. True, but those are definitely not the only answers. There are also peanut butter, rice, beans, almonds, corn, soy, sesame seeds. Many protein rich foods can be ingredients such as buckwheat, soy, and seitan. They take on the taste of the other ingredients in the recipe. Seitan can be mixed in sauces, gravies, and stews; soy often replaces meats and buckwheat is a common ingredient in pancakes, and works as a stuffing. It is not necessary to eat these foods often but they should be part of your diet.

Workout and weight losss on wheels- balance

Balance is important in many aspects of life it's not just about eating balanced meals. Balancing also means shifting weight from side to side for example moving the strap on your purse from one arm to another or doing the same amount of stretches with each leg. Your light use should also be balanced, there is no need to maintain the same amount of brightness each day. As the day progresses you should change the brightness and eventually make it pitched dark in the bedroom during evening hours. Back to the beginning of this lesson. You may not be able to control others abilities to choose well, but if you make the decision to be healthy first, menu planning at home or menu selection at a restaurant, if you take the initiative, others are more likely to follow. Always keep these points in mind.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- eat more weigh less

How can that be(you ask)? The key is to eat the right kids of food. Rice Cakes and chick peas may not appeal to your palate at first but give them a try, it would be worthwhile in the long run. First your body was meant to eat more than three times a day with hours in between. Constantly refuel your body by eating small mouthfuls of vegetables and fruit so it is not in a starvation mode by dinner and by bedtime. Skipping meals is a very bad idea and it throws the entire digestive system off kilter. Eat balanced food and vary the choices, colors, and textures so they are appealing to the senses of smell and vision not just taste. Use different methods to cook the foods such as broiling and grilling rather than frying them. Eat as little sugary and alcoholic drinks as possible

Workout and weight loss on wheels- Increase mood decrease pounds

There's overwhelming proof that exercise puts a person in a good mood and improves their brain power. So why would you not want to do that on a daily basis? Especially if it's free! People take expensive prescriptions to boost their moods, enroll in expensive trips to the spa to beautify themselves on the outside, and see expensive professionals to feel better about themselves on the inside. All one has to do is commit to 30 minutes of stretching, weight lifting, walking and/or cycling to get the same affect. You will also be happier if instead of fighting snack food cravings all day, just give in but rely on something that won't make you feel bad about yourself. Just find a few choices that will decrease your hunger but not increase your weight; then carry it with you wherever you go. Make meals last at least 20 minutes longer, not by eating more, but having better conversation. You may surprise what you learn from others who you may see everyday. It also helps to put the utensils down after each mouthful, drink water before the meal begins (to fill you up), and chew slower. Try it

Workout and weight loss on wheels- out of sight, out of mind.

It is suggested that you put unhealthy (junk)food out of plain sight. However, it is easier on you to not make those purchases in the first place. It is better to bring your kids up on granola bars, nuts, seeds, apples, celery, and carrots. They are likely to get many opportunities to eat chips, soda, and candy outside of your home anyway. Portion size is a crucial part of weight loss so similarly to the idea of keeping junk food out of sight, the same goes to full serving dishes during dinner. First, this leaves more room on the kitchen or dining room table. Second, it is less likely that you will get up for more helpings if it takes some effort to get to it. Third, if you are engaged in conversation during the meal that conversations will be broken if you leave the room to get more food. Fourth, If you do get up for another helping make sure the conscious decision requires effort of movement- every bit counts. Fifth, when the meal is over go back and forth extra times to collect everything on the table. Though inefficient and time consuming, clean - up balances out the calories you just ate.

Workout and weight loss on wheels- cold cuts in the cold

This popular lunch food may not continue its popularity. Out of 9 kinds, turkey and roast beef were found to be the most healthy. Another negative is that some experts say that eating carbohydrates (bread) and protein (meat) together digestion is harder. Two other examples, grilled chicken breasts or whole roasted turkey, are even better. They have zero artificial preservatives or additives. However these are not readily available in the deli counter. In general, cold cuts are filled with nitrates and additives this can raise the risk of diabetes.free and without certain preservatives, or they say they are made without nitrates. Sounds appealing, but don’t ask the deli guy to slice some up just yet. A few other tips include other healthy items in your sandwich such as lettuce, tomato, avocado; use plant based - spreads (hummus); and don't include cheese or white bread.
